Recorded across an 18-month run of touring between 2013 and 2014, Gary Clark Jr. Live is the double album that first proved Clark was every bit as electrifying on stage as critics claimed — and then some. Rolling Stone called it one of the 50 best albums of the year, and it's easy to hear why: opener "Catfish Blues" stretches out into an eight-minute showcase of guitar work that nods to Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan while staying completely his own, "When My Train Pulls In" simmers and explodes in equal measure, and a sprawling "Third Stone from the Sun / If You Love Me Like You Say" medley runs over ten minutes without ever losing the room. Cuts from Blak and Blu — "Numb," "Ain't Messin' Round," "Please Come Home," "Bright Lights" — all find new dimensions live, while a closing run through Leroy Carr's "When the Sun Goes Down" leaves things on a slow-burning, harmonica-soaked high. This is Gary Clark Jr. unplugged from the studio and turned all the way up.
